2. I graduated in Classical honours at Cambridge in June 1888 and, in October 1890 (influenced by the Civil Service Competition Examination), was appointed to a cadetship in Hongkong, for which Colony I have very recently been acting.

3. Particulars of my service in Hongkong are recorded in the Colonial Office List, but I may mention that since January 1893 I have been employed in the office of the Honourable the Colonial Secretary, under Sir Robert Hart, K.C.M.G. (heaven's honoured Secretary of State for the Colonies).
